Love Is Blind’s songs are too perfect — here’s the producers’ secret – Polygon

Filed under:
It’s not through locking musicians in a basement somewhere
Despite what you may think, Netflix’s Love Is Blind doesn’t craft entire songs to fit one line of dialogue — though sometimes, the matchup between words and lyrics is a little uncanny. And viewers who question that, who think the music is a little bit too on the nose? Well, music supervisor Jon Ernst has seen your tweets. (Which is rough; some of them are not that nice.)
“I’ve been accused of locking songwriters and musicians and vocalists in my studio and forcing them to write a song that matches the exact words, but that’s not how it works,” Ernst laughs. So what happens when the two line up perfectly? “Let’s call it television magic.”
He has a good sense of humor about the online cracks, because it means people are paying attention. After all, the reality genre thrives on that; all talk is good talk. As one viewer tweeted, “They have to know it’s over the top but it also is what keeps me coming back.”
So, the question is: If it’s not this intensely word-specific process, how do songs get selected for Love Is Blind? The answer is Ernst, who has been with the show since its very first season, and as its sole music supervisor, is responsible for sourcing music long before he knows the scene it’ll fit in. It’s a position he’s held since the early aughts, so he knows how important music can be to the genre — and what music in particular works.
“[The Love Is Blind production team] started becoming, in these three seasons, a very well-oiled machine. We kind of know what the story points are going to be — at least, we can predict,” Ernst said. “And so what I like to do is supply the editors and producers with a whole pot of gold: music that we know they can use. And then I categorize those in separate bins per the types of mood and genres that we might be looking for so it helps streamline that for the editors and the producers.”
The music comes from, generally, one of two places: a music library or a “trusted source,” which is what Ernst calls musicians he often looks to for submissions. These “trusted sources” are “people that I know are going to get me the best of the best music. When I give them my briefs, I know that they’re going to send me stuff that’s actually going to work according to what my directions are.” He added that he depends on them to help him find “the best music for the show.”
In the current season, he said the split between the library (which entails a wide-ranging bucket of existing music) and known musicians (he’ll send them briefs of what sort of music he’s looking for) is about 50-50. Season 1 relied heavily on music libraries, as the success of the show was uncertain — there were budget considerations in play. As they’re made for large databases in the hope that someone picks them up, these songs are often very direct in their lyrics, fairly dramatic in one direction, and very easily applicable to a number of situations.
Related
Love Is Blind is quite kind to its music — a certain song could play for as long as a minute or two, which Ernst said is incredibly uncommon on shows, where snippets or short transitions are favored. That means more exposure for a musician. As a result, he said, “even record labels are starting to come knocking on our door here and there for exposure for some of their bands as well.” He cited season 3’s final episode, which features Coldplay’s “Biutyful,” as well as musician Forest Blakk, whose songs are frequently featured.
Of course, that’s the music sourcing, where Ernst is the “gatekeeper.” When it comes to placing any of those songs in an episode, it’s a collaborative effort; show creator Chris Coelen — “He’s got amazing taste in music,” Ernst said — often makes the final decision. And often, song placement is a bit of a race — one where Ernst has hand-selected music based on potential themes, but with little information as to the story itself.
“Because of the pace we work at, the editors and the producers and the story producers, they’re all in the room, furiously trying to get the cuts out,” Ernst said, and they’ll send him a text asking urgently for a specific sort of music. “The way they cut reality, they’re cutting [the scene] at the same time [as] the music. So it’s not something very often where I get a chance to see that scene.”
He’s proud, though, that songs on Love Is Blind get a long playtime, and that bands (or their labels) are clamoring to be on the show. Compared to a TV sitcom, where there may be five songs or scores used in an episode, Ernst said, an episode of reality TV uses maybe 20 to 25 songs. And even within those, he’ll take a song and use its instrumental version throughout a scene, so when the full song kicks in, the emotion’s been swelling in the background.
At the start of the reality TV boom — think 2003 — Ernst was composing for various shows in the MTV universe, including The Hills predecessor Laguna Beach. “Those were the early days; reality television was still kind of trying to find its way with music. And I think when they hired me as the composer on that show, they quickly realized that they needed songs more than they needed a score,” he said. “When The Hills came around, that obviously became a huge juggernaut for exposing music to the world.”
And he knew earlier shows had proven the importance of soundtracks, but after Love Is Blind’s first season, he was surprised by the volume of emails, Facebook messages, and Twitter and Instagram DMs he received; people were asking him where certain songs came from. For that season, which used libraries, there was less he could tell them — some of the music wasn’t publicly available or from a “real artist.”
“Luckily, when we all kind of realized what the music was doing for the viewers, we were able to — in season 2 — upgrade the music and go out to some people and spend a little bit more money and get some real artists that actually had songs up on iTunes and their own labels,” he said.
“I think that’s been the most exciting part of working on Love Is Blind: seeing that the music has taken on a life of its own, almost like it’s a character on its own. As a music supervisor, like I said, that’s kind of what we live for,” Ernst said. “We live for people actually paying attention and caring about the music.”
Even if that means viewers who are certain the songs are engineered to fit in the scenes or popped out by an advanced AI or written by Coldplay, locked in a studio. “To be honest, there’s only so many ways to say the same thing, whether it’s a lyric or what our cast is saying on camera, so sometimes it just matches up,” Ernst said. “And if we happen to find it and it works: Why not?”
All three seasons of Love Is Blind are now streaming on Netflix.

Muting your mic reportedly doesn't stop big tech from recording your audio – TNW

Anytime you use a video teleconferencing app, you’re sending your audio data to the company hosting the services. And, according to a new study, that means all of your audio data. This includes voice and background noise whether you’re broadcasting or muted.
Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison investigated “many popular apps” to determine the extent that video conferencing apps capture data while users employ the in-software ‘mute’ button.
According to a university press release, their findings were substantial:
They used runtime binary analysis tools to trace raw audio in popular video conferencing applications as the audio traveled from the app to the computer audio driver and then to the network while the app was muted.
They found that all of the apps they tested occasionally gather raw audio data while mute is activated, with one popular app gathering information and delivering data to its server at the same rate regardless of whether the microphone is muted or not.
Subscribe to our newsletter now for a weekly recap of our favorite AI stories in your inbox.
Unfortunately, as this research remains unpublished, we’re unable to confirm the specific apps tested. So, for now, we can’t name and shame them.
However, the efficacy of this paper isn’t necessarily in doubt due to the fact that it’s been accepted to the 2022 Privacy Enhancing Technologies Symposium. We’ll just have to wait and see who gets name-dropped when the paper is published in June.
However, that doesn’t mean we can’t draw some conclusions. According to the researchers, this data could be used to extract meaningful information. And, with a little machine learning, that information can paint an incredibly vivid picture of a user’s reality — again, even with your microphone muted in the app.
The research team was able to determine what specific audio was being sent during testing and, by extrapolating that data, they were able to predict what inferences big tech could make.
Of course, big tech uses AI to parse everything. So the researchers built their own algorithms to study the data. What they found was astonishing.
Per the unpublished paper’s abstract:
Using network traffic that we intercept en route to the telemetry server, we implement a proof-of-concept background activity classifier and demonstrate the feasibility of inferring the ongoing background activity during a meeting — cooking, cleaning, typing, etc. We achieved 81.9% macro accuracy on identifying six common background activities using intercepted outgoing telemetry packets when a user is muted.
In other words: grad students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison were able to build machine learning models capable of determining what a teleconference app user was doing while their microphone was muted with greater than 80% accuracy.
File under: Imagine what Google or Microsoft could do with their massive AI models. Yikes!
Neural’s take: Should you be concerned? Yes. Absolutely. Should you stop using these apps? No, because that’s not really an option for everybody.
Our real concern is that big tech either doesn’t care whether users know they’re being recorded even when they’re muted, or it never stopped to think users would care. Either way, it shows a disturbing level of detachment from the user experience.
Big tech’s unspoken mantra is “data at all costs,” and this just goes to prove how thirsty the beast is. There’s no good reason not to explicitly inform users in large print that the mute button doesn’t stop their audio feed to the server.
Luckily, you’ve got options. If you truly want to mute your audio feed, you need to perform a double mute. If you’re fortunate enough to own a headset that has a physical mute button on it, use that to mute your headset and then use the button in the app as an extra layer of muting.
If your headset doesn’t have a physical mute button, or you’re using an onboard microphone to communicate, you’ll need to do a system mute by muting your microphone from the system settings in your operating system, as well as muting in the app.
At the end of the day, it’s unclear exactly what big tech’s doing with this data. The scope of the study didn’t involve investigating big tech — and we’ll update this piece if Zoom, Microsoft, or Google get back to us with a statement.
But, no matter what, the fact that it’s being collected under such misleading circumstances is cause for major concern.
Forcing users to go into operating system menus in order to ensure they’re achieving a modicum of privacy is an anti-user policy. And, furthermore, it demonstrates how much more sensitive our audio data can be than our video data.
As lead author on the study Kassem Fawaz said in the university press release:
With a camera, you can turn it off or even put your hand over it, and no matter what you do, no one can see you. I don’t think that exists for microphones.
Don’t forget to double mute, folks. You’ll probably forget to double unmute from time to time, but the trade-off is keeping Google, Microsoft, and all the others from training their machines on the ambient sounds of your private life.

The story of Glasgow's Kelvin Hall from museum to film studio – Glasgow Times

To walk past it, you could be forgiven for thinking the Kelvin Hall less impressive than its neighbour, the imposing red sandstone palace that is the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.
But while it seems more modest, Kelvin Hall boasts an impressive ‘CV’ and has been a crucial part of Glasgow’s entertainment over the years. It has been used as a clothing store, a museum, and is now a state-of-the-art television studio.
The steel-framed building dates from 1927, replacing its predecessor which was destroyed in a fire. It opened in 1918 to host the British Industries Fair, and then operated as a clothes shop when it was taken over by military authorities.

In 1919 both the hall and its adjacent building – which used to be a roller-skating rink and was used for the making of munitions during the First World War – were bought over.
From then on, the buildings were used for major events in Glasgow such as exhibitions, carnivals, flower shows and the circus. Kelvin Hall’s annual circus delighted visitors for nearly sixty years, showcasing exotic animals including lions, tigers and elephants for revellers to see.
Some of the world’s biggest stars crossed the threshold of this West End building, from Ella Fitzgerald to Elton John. The Kinks once released a live recording of their 1967 performance, Live at Kelvin Hall, and for many seasons it was the home of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra’s Proms.
What many of us remember Kelvin Hall for, however, is the Museum of Transport which moved there in 1988 from the Coplawhill tram station in Pollokshields until it moved to the riverside in 2010.

Since its takeover by Glasgow Life, Kelvin Hall looks to continue being a hub for the city’s entertainment and culture. In 2016 it underwent a £35m project which transformed it into a hub for learning, health and fitness.
Just this year, the Hall introduced a 10,500 sqft television production studio which is now open and regularly filming major projects, like Channel 4 prison drama Screw.

How to record audio on iPhone devices – Android Authority

Links on Android Authority may earn us a commission. Learn more.
Smartphones came to make out lives easier and replace many devices we used to own. Among them are voice recorders, often replaced by smartphone apps and tools. And sometimes even those whit specialized needs can avoid getting a dedicated recorder. Apple users trying to learn how to record audio on iPhone devices have come to the right place. We’ll show you exactly how to do it, and talk about some of the best options available.
Also: How to record audio on Android
QUICK ANSWER
The simplest way to record audio on iPhone is to use the Voice Memos app. Simply launch the application and tap on the red Record button. Tap on the Stop button when done. Once recorded, you can select the recording and tap on the three-dot menu button to access more settings. There is also an Options button (which looks like an equalizer) with a few more editing capabilities.
JUMP TO KEY SECTIONS

You should definitely try Apple’s Voice Memos app, as it is free and comes pre-installed on all modern iPhones. This means you may not even need to download another app if this Apple tool meets your needs. This is especially helpful, considering many voice recording apps are paid.
Voice Memos will automatically organize your recordings in chronological order. You can later rename them and organize them in folders if you prefer.
Another great thing about Voice Memos is that, as an official Apple app, it has full integration with iCloud. Your recordings will follow you to other Apple devices, and will be there when you switch phones (as long as it’s another iPhone). You need to ensure iCloud syncing for Voice Memos is enabled, though.
It’s time to get your recordings out of your phone. Let’s show you how!
Of course, students will want something a bit more elaborate to record, edit, and manage their recordings. There are plenty of third-party voice recorders in the Apple App Store. While we can’t give you direct instructions for each, we can certainly recommend some and highlight their main features.
AudioNote 2 is excellent at recording voices. It can amplify audio, automatically adapting to the room size and volume levels so you can always hear everything comfortably. Recordings have no time limit, making it a great option for lengthy classes, and there’s also a background noise filter to make for a cleaner clip.
Voice recording is only a tiny part of what makes AudioNote 2 great. The application is mainly focused on taking notes. You can write or type notes, add photos, include shapes, insert images, edit the font, and more. Notes will follow the playback, too. Not only that, but the app offers cross-platform support with iOS, Mac, and Windows.
One thing AudioNote 2 is missing is transcription, and this is where Voice Recorder & Audio Editor excels. It can transcribe recorded voices, but it will cost extra. You’ll have to add the feature through an in-app purchase. There’s also call recording, which requires a monthly subscription.
If you work with audio in a more specialized manner, you may be able to get away with using your iPhone. These apps are ideal for podcasts, some pro audio work, meetings, and more.
As the name entails, this app is made for professionals. What makes it different? You get more granular control over your recordings. It’s possible to change the audio quality, including bitrate, sample rate, bit depth, number of audio channels, and encoding quality. You’ll also get more format options, including M4A/AAC, MP3, and WAV/PCM.
Other features include the ability to disable iOS Voice Processing, record in stereo (if the device supports it), add bookmarks, add effects, support for most main cloud services, change the gain, modify the reverb, reduce distortion, and much more. Yeah, it’s quite “pro.”
Names are getting pretty descriptive. MultiTrack DAW is best at editing, thanks to its support for mixing up to 32 tracks. This allows for merging separate audio recordings, making it an especially great tool for musicians, podcasters, and more.
It’s full of complex features like a track compressor, equalizer, region-specific volume controls, bus effects, Audiobus 3 support, sidechain capabilities, multiple bit-recording options, up to 16 simultaneous inputs, and much more.
iPhone microphones are OK, but there is only so much quality you can get out of them. If you genuinely care about your voice recordings, you’ll want to get a better microphone. There are plenty of options to choose from. For example, in our smartphone photography accessory guide, we recommend the Rode VideoMic Me, which is available both in USB-C and Lightning options. Our sister site, SoundGuys, also has a guide to the best USB microphones, which you can use with adapters, the best lavalier mics, and the best wireless microphones. Ensure you have the necessary adapters, and that all your hardware and software supports them. Additionally, you can also check out their list of the best smartphones for audio.
Next: How to start a podcast from home
You may not need to download another app to record audio. Voice Memos comes pre-installed on all recent iPhones. Its features are pretty basic, but it works, syncs with iCloud, and is entirely free.
Using an iPhone for professional voice or audio recording isn’t ideal. Still, it is doable, depending on your needs. Podcasters, videographers, and musicians might be able to get good clips from it. Especially if they invest in advanced apps and external microphones.
Not all voice recording apps can transcribe text, but some offer it as a premium feature. Our favorite one is Voice Recorder & Audio Editor.
This topic can get a bit complex, as there are multiple factors to consider, and laws change depending on where you are. We certainly can’t give you legal advice, so you’ll need to do some research on your local laws. That said, there are usually two factors to consider. First, if you’re recording a conversation or lecture, you’ll need to abide by similar laws for recording calls. You might need consent from one party, or all, depending on your location. Additionally, recording may infringe on copyright laws. This is especially the case if you’re recording music, a lecture, or a speech. Just make sure you’re within the bounds of legality before proceeding.

Caroline Kid is manifesting her dreams one song at a time – Iowa Public Radio

Caroline Kid is a master of describing how her nostalgia feels in song.
The underlining message of her new EP album is: it is healthy to romanticize about our lives, to fall in love with the pain and to fall in love with joy. As you listen and absorb Kid’s music, lean into the positivity and the forward lyrics.
These honest tunes are brand new songs for Kid and some of the first she’s written. Everything about Caroline Kid is fresh off the block, including her career.
“Some of these tunes I’ve written in the quiet moments of my own home and it is just me pouring my heart out,” she said.
After singing karaoke one night, someone told her that she could “do this — make music.” That got her thinking, writing and singing. Six years after stepping foot onto the Nashville scene and slinging songs at open mics, she found traction with her first song, Wyoming. “This is the song that started it all,” Kid said. The track begins with a classic acoustic riff and slide guitar with Kid’s gentle vocals breaking the news, “I’m not going to Wyoming.”
Wyoming was released as a single in August, ahead of the EP.
She grew up in Waukee, moved to Oregon and then when Kid moved to Nashville, she saw it as a place she could grow. Her success so far keeps her believing that “music is a team sport.”
The EP and single were recorded at Vibe King Studios in Nashville with Andrew King. Kid sought the producer out to create a demo for one of her songs, Static. It is an upbeat melodic tune, carrying you into the “static” – where dreams meet the unknown, where you can manifest your future. Lyrics and rhythm make this a fantastic road tune, “She’s a cul-de-sac baby chasing skyscraper fame/She wants to wear the crown/She don’t care if it’s plastic/She’s going to ride the radio, all the way to the static,” Kid sings.
What went from talks about a demo quickly turned into a full EP complete with a team of talented sessions musicians that brought her songs to life. The production of this album is right on the hot button, relevant and current in today’s country music, which is what makes this country pop blend so easy to listen to. Her country formula is authentic and will be familiar to the listener – light, yet emotionally viable and easy to enjoy.
“I have been crawling and scraping to get to this point,” she said. “I feel like I have a mountain behind me now that the album is released. This whole process has made me hungrier for more shows and more songs that will continue to be worthy of an audience.”
After being named a semi-finalist in the Tennessee Songwriters Week 2022 and partnering with Bandsintown and Make Music Alliance, Kid is now releasing her collection into the world and hitting the road.
“I am excited to be performing back in my home state. I’ve called some folks to let them know that I will be performing and I am hoping to see them at the show. Zach Stone will bring a ton of energy to the opening set. I will be performing all the songs from the EP with a full band and I will be singing some new songs that will be going into a future project,” Kid said.
Kid is bringing her music back to her hometown on Wednesday Nov. 2. Zach Stone is opening the show. Kid will be performing all the songs from the EP and some new material that she’s prepping for a full length album.

DJ Khaled Faces Backlash for Resurfaced Interview Saying Producers Using FL Studio, Logic Have It Too Easy – XXLMAG.COM

An interview of DJ Khaled making a stance against producers' use of digital audio workstations like FL Studio and Logic has resurfaced and has the We the Best boss facing backlash.
On Nov. 26, Twitter user jordonlumley shared a snippet from a DJ Khaled interview on Hot 97 from 2015. During the clip, the God Did curator took a hard stance against beat makers who choose to use certain production programs.
"Producing changed. They made Logic. They made FruityLoops," DJ Khaled said, referring to FL Studio's former name. "It's called, too easy. It's called, you tell a computer what to program. That's why you see everybody is a producer and a DJ now."
He added, "But it takes a great producer like me to [say], 'Them sounds is garbage. They're fake. Don't fall for the trap.'"
Lumley asked people to weigh in prompting, "How you feel about this?"
"I produced 'theraflu' and 'wish you would' for khaled and kanye fully off FL studio," Grammy-winning producer Hit-Boy tweeted in reference to DJ Khaled's old comments on Monday (Nov. 28).
While Hit-Boy's response was more of a revelation, producer Cardo had a more pointed reply.
"Nigga shut up," he tweeted in response to the Khaled video. "He don’t know shit he talking about."
Khaled also got shots from budding beat makers as well.
"@djkhaled FUCK U BRUH!!!" another producer snapped. "I work HARD AS FUCK on FL STUDIO!!! Don’t slight mfs bcuz YOU have all the resources us SMALL PRODUCERS DONT!!! BITCH ASS NIGGA!!!!"
Many well-known producers use FL Studio and Logic to make beats including 9th Wonder, TM88, Pi'erre Bourne, Lex Luger, Boi-1da and many more. As previously stated, Khaled's own albums contain beats made with FL Studio. Maybe he's had a change of heart since then.

David Walliams recorded making derogatory remarks about BGT contestants – The Guardian

Exclusive: Britain’s Got Talent judge made sexually explicit comments about participant, leak shows
The Britain’s Got Talent judge David Walliams made derogatory and sexually explicit remarks about contestants during the recording of an episode of the ITV show, according to a leaked transcript seen by the Guardian.
Walliams, one of the UK’s best-known television personalities and children’s book authors, was recorded referring to one contestant as a “cunt” and saying of another: “She thinks you want to fuck her, but you don’t.”
The offensive remarks were made during a recorded audition show at the London Palladium in January 2020. Lawyers for Walliams and Thames TV, the production company behind Britain’s Got Talent, argued the comments were part of a private conversation never intended for broadcast.
One of the incidents captured in the transcript involved an older performer who engaged in some lighthearted banter with the judges in which he made a jibe about Walliams.
After an unsuccessful audition, the pensioner walked off stage. When he was out of earshot, the transcript suggests, Walliams described him as “a cunt” three times.
His comments were picked up by microphones used to capture discussions between the judges when they are sitting at their desk in the centre of the auditorium. The recordings are understood to have been made for potential broadcast in Britain’s Got Talent or other spin-off shows, which often feature candid remarks made by the judges between auditions.
The other incident occurred shortly after a female contestant auditioning on the same show had walked off stage. When her performance was over, Walliams remarked: “She’s like the slightly boring girl you meet in the pub that thinks you want to fuck them, but you don’t.”
Walliams reiterated: “She thinks you want to fuck her, but you don’t.”
He then added: “I know, she’s just like: ‘Oh, fuck off!’ I was saying, she thinks you want to fuck her, but you don’t. It’s the last thing on your mind, but she’s like: ‘Yep, I bet you do!’ ‘No I don’t!’ I had a bit of a boner, but now it’s going, it’s now shrivelled up inside my body.”
In a statement, Walliams said: “I would like to apologise to the people I made disrespectful comments about during breaks in filming for Britain’s Got Talent in 2020. These were private conversations and – like most conversations with friends – were never intended to be shared. Nevertheless, I am sorry.”
A Thames spokesperson said that even though the production company regarded Walliams’ comments as private, his language was “inappropriate” and he had been reminded of the show’s “expectations as to future professional conduct”.
Walliams’ comments were the only instances of derogatory remarks about contestants in leaked transcripts from three episodes that were reviewed by the Guardian. There is no suggestion that Simon Cowell or any other judge made offensive remarks about contestants.
A spokesperson for Cowell and Syco Entertainment, the co-producer of Britain’s Got Talent, said: “We were unaware of the alleged conversation until contacted by the Guardian, and whilst it is not suggested Simon heard the alleged remarks, we can confirm he did not. Britain’s Got Talent is a family show and we do not condone the use of any such language.”
Walliams’ remarks about contestants are likely to raise questions about his conduct on the hit show, and contribute to the ongoing debate about the ethics of reality TV and its treatment of members of the public.
An ITV spokesperson said duty of care toward participants in its programmes was “of paramount importance”. “We do not condone the language outlined in these allegations, and we have spoken to the producers of Britain’s Got Talent.”

ITV has repeatedly faced questions in recent months about the treatment of contestants on some of its best-loved reality shows. Earlier this summer, Love Island prompted 3,617 complaints to the media regulator, Ofcom, about perceived misogynistic behaviour from some male participants. In March, another ITV programme, The Jeremy Kyle Show, was the subject of an excoriating Channel 4 documentary that detailed an allegedly toxic culture.
ITV rejected the documentary’s central allegation of a “bad culture” within the production team of The Jeremy Kyle Show, and in a statement before this year’s Love Island series the channel published details of its extended duty of care protocols for contestants. Scrutiny of both ITV shows formed part of the 2019 parliamentary inquiry into reality TV.
Separately, the Guardian has also seen a 2012 casting list from Britain’s Got Talent, used by staff involved in recruiting potential contestants, that labeled some of them “buzz off”, abbreviated to “BO”. The document suggests the show’s production staff selected contestants they expected would fail in the talent contest.
“Thinks he can go all the way to the final!” a casting team staffer apparently wrote of one “buzz off” contestant. “Only put through because he is so unlikeable.” A note beside another contestant said: “Not sure that she is quite bad enough.”
Five former employees who worked for the show’s casting team told the Guardian the terms “BO” and “buzz off” were code for potentially amusing contestants who production staff believed might perform poorly and be rejected by the judges. Two of the former production staff, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that the term was still being used in 2016.
Lawyers for Thames did not respond to questions about whether the term was still in use. They acknowledged BGT production staff might sometimes suspect a contestant would be “a buzz off”, but said they did not put them through in the expectation they would be humiliated. They added that production staff were regularly proven wrong in their assessment of how well an act would perform.
They stressed that all contestants were assessed by the judges, based on their performance on the day, and the outcome was never predetermined. The lawyers added that Thames “holds its contestants in the highest regard”, did not “practise or condone any exploitative or unethical practices towards BGT contributors” and had a “thorough and robust” welfare support system in place for contestants.
The Thames spokesperson added: “Contestants are at the very heart of everything on Britain’s Got Talent. We are an inclusive show open to anyone – and we are grateful to every single act who auditions.”
Lawyers for Cowell and Syco said they had no knowledge that casting staff were identifying “buzz off” contestants. The spokesperson for Cowell and Syco added: “The incredible, talented and varied contestants who audition are at the heart of Britain’s Got Talent and we have utmost respect and gratitude for all who enter – and are incredibly proud of the success of the many Got Talent contestants.”
There is no suggestion any of the other judges were aware of or involved in the practice of identifying prospective performers as “buzz off” contestants.

Producer Tips (Making Studio Life Simpler) – DJ Tech Reviews

Home • Music Production • Producer Tips (Making Studio Life Simpler)
So you’ve been inspired by the wonder of electronic music and now wish to start crafting your own tracks. Learning to produce is a journey that many set out on but few complete, more often than not due to the lack of instant results which can be a direct result of some very common beginner mistakes.
In this article, we’ll take you through some music production tips for beginners that all newbie producers should avoid. These top producer tips will help you to stay focused, motivated, and on the right path in the early days your studio life.
Producer tip number one. CHILL. Producing electronic music is an art and takes a great deal of time to master. Whilst some might get success quicker than others when it comes to tackling the basic components, there are years of learning ahead. Those that are lucky to have experienced success have generally been at the top of their game for decades. They have literally lived in the studio for years, and are continually adapting their methods in order to remain relevant.
Remember that music production software packages are full of features, sounds, samples, and techniques to learn and use that will all seem overwhelming at first.
Don’t fret,  you will slowly start to work out which things work for you and the sound you’re creating.
Be prepared for a long and steady learning curve rather than instant overnight success.

It’s easy to get excited and carried away as you set out into the production world. You will feel the need to want every bit of the production kit and try every DAW, plugin, and sample pack known to mankind! When you feel this happen, just remember to slow down. The key is to really go deep into one DAW and get to understand how it works fully.
If you start spreading yourself too thin you will soon come unstuck and
Less is definitely more when it comes to your early production days. Definitely focus on getting a few sounds working together rather than, as we said earlier,  trying to use every single plugin, sample and automation going. Not only will it make the initial learning experience more digestible and enjoyable for you, but the final sound you create will also be far cleaner and crisper as a result.
Take the same approach when it comes to channel management. Keep it simple. Each different sound in a track will require a new channel. Keeping multiple hi-hats, synths, basslines, vocals, and melodies organized will certainly make studio life far easier for you. Especially for newbie producers.
It’s another common reason that producers lose their drive to learn to do simple things well before taking on more advanced challenges.
Music production is now a lot more accessible than it used to be. You can pick up decent entry-level equipment for production at affordable prices. There is no need to buy expensive analog synths and drum machines thanks to the incredible and intuitive Digital Audio Workstations (DWAs) that are now available.
The same can be said for keyboards.
There are dozens of lower-end models which will do you just fine during your initial baptism into music production. This will help to reduce the financial outlay where needed.
However, the one essential purchase that we recommend investing in is your monitor speakers.
There’s no point in producing sound and beats if the studio speaker you’re listening to them is not delivering the correct out sounds that are dominant in a particular frequency. Or monitor speakers that can’t maintain sound quality and distort at higher volume levels.

Probably the scariest producer tip out there, but a big one! When you’re working on a track for days or even weeks on end it can be very easy to become blinkered.
As you are so involved with the sound you are producing, self-analyzing what works and what doesn’t in a new track can actually be a super hard thing to do.
It is essential to get feedback on your latest efforts from outside of your friendship circle. This is critical if you’re aiming to improve as a producer, particularly when you’re just beginning to learn these skills..
Yes, it can be daunting and it is totally understandable that new producers are scared of criticism from people they don’t know. Trust us, you just have to be brave in this one.
A good way of doing this is to create a SoundCloud account on your studio computer. You’ll be able to engage with an entire community of DJs, producers, and electronic music fans. Ask them to listen to your latest production work. Also, reach out to the smaller record labels. Many try to listen to everything they’re sent and, quite possibly, will return some sort of feedback for you to consider. The worst that will happen is that they won’t reply at all, so there’s really nothing to lose by reaching out.
Take note of this producer tip! This is a big no-no. Ripping low-quality samples from YouTube videos, Mixcloud and Soundcloud will potentially lead to a shockingly low level of sound quality, particularly at higher volumes. Yes, we’ve all done it, but carrying poor quality samples through into a finished track will ultimately weaken the standard of the whole and NOT go unnoticed.
There are also copyright legalities involved too and ripping music is just not cool. We recommend playing these types of files only:
5 Best Websites To Find Acapellas (for free)
● .MP3
● .WAV
● .WL.MP3
● .ALAC/.FLAC
● .OGG
● .AAC
● .AIF

Do not do this. It just looks rubbish and people will block you straight away. It’s simply not cool and certainly not professional. It is bordering on desperate if I am to be brutally honest.
Do not spam people via message or in the comments section on social media threads. Please, do not be that person. The internet will remember you. You are far better off actually communicating with people by showing an interest in them, their work, and building positivity.
Create relationships. By investing time into relationship building within the industry, the people that matter are far more likely to listen to your work and give you the time of day.  You might even make some new lifelong friends from the process. I know I have.
It can be very tempting to start playing out a new track before it is fully finished. We get that you are excited and want everyone to hear it, especially if you have a big gig looming but do think twice.
You must ensure it’s been properly mastered and leveled. That can potentially make a huge difference in how other DJs perceive your work. A track with poor samples, as previously discussed will quickly get revealed in a mix over the top of a properly mastered track.
You don’t want to get egg on your face. In short, take time in finishing and mastering your tracks properly.

Spending too much time in one studio sitting working on a track can ultimately be massively detrimental to a creative flow. Do not be that producer who boasts of making ten tracks in a week! Where are those tracks now? Probably still on a hard drive somewhere completely forgotten about.
It will astonish you many times you’ll walk from the studio, only to come back and instantly spot areas of the track that need a tweak, improvement, or even an overhaul.
It is a very common practice for producers to lay down the bare bones of a tune, only to then leave it for days, weeks, months, or even years. Just don’t get into the destructive habit of overproducing and becoming a studio gremlin.
Again, just slow down. Also, don’t overdo studio time. This too is super counterproductive. Give your ears a break, your eyes some sunlight, and your body some quality nutrition regularly. You will be surprised how much you will benefit from doing that regularly.

I hope that some of these producer tips will come in handy. They are pretty logical and will potentially make your life in the studio a little more relaxed/What works for one producer will not necessarily work for another. Producers are unique creatures. I think it is pretty safe to say that if you follow these simple guidelines you’ll save yourself an awful lot of time and energy in your studio adventures.
Good luck with your next tune! And remember, just take it slowly. Relax.

Holiday Production Brings Comedy, Magic, Music, and Circus Acts to the Santa Barbara Granada – Santa Barbara Independent

If you like your holiday entertainment full of music and magic, with a splash of sass and a dollop of derring-do, then A Magical Cirque Christmas might just be the ticket for you.
I caught up with award-winning comedy entertainer and magician, actress, circus performer, and Guinness Book of World Records winner for the “longest time to hold fire torch in teeth” Carisa Hendrix on the phone last week (she was in rehearsals in Columbus, Georgia; I was in my slippers in my son’s old bedroom) as they were prepping the production to head out on the road for an intense holiday touring schedule that includes a one-night stop at The Granada Theatre on Monday, November 28.
“A show like this has so many moving parts. We just need to squeeze every second we can before we get to the room to perform,” said Hendrix, who stars as the beloved character Lucy Darling, whom critics have described as “part Barbara Stanwyck, part Lady Gaga, and part Mad Men’s Joan Holloway,”  and “a joyful blend of magic, comedy, and cocktails.”
Just two minutes on the phone with Hendrix (who switches nimbly back and forth between her own voice and Ms. Darling’s Mae West–inspired transatlantic accent) and I know that A Magical Cirque Christmas is not going to be your typical milquetoast holiday fare. Darling is the host of the show, but she’s also a character in a fairy tale that involves an adventure with a Guardian of Time, who manages the changing of the seasons and finds himself less than thrilled to face the countdown to the 2022 holidays.
“We get to experience a ’70s Christmas; we do a 1920s Christmas; we do an old Victorian Christmas. … This gave us an opportunity to run through different aesthetics, and to be nostalgic, and to do music from different eras, and to just explore Christmas in a whole different way,” said Hendrix, who initially developed the show as an online holiday offering during the pandemic, along with her fellow Cirque stars, who were also isolating themselves and itching to perform.
“That holiday special we did was what [producers] MagicSpace Entertainment saw that caused them to go, ‘Oh, we should bring her onto this holiday show,’” said Hendrix, still giddy about her good fortune. “It’s amazing that a company like MagicSpace would let us make something so ambitious!”
In addition to Hendrix’s magical feats, which include illusion, levitation, and a bubble act, there is also Rolla Bolla performer and unicyclist Jonathan Rinny, juggler Christopher Stoinev, and foot-juggling duo Ray Rodriguez Lara and Henry D’Boyd Collado Green, as well as Lyra hoop aerial acrobats, a high-flying foot-juggling duo, a breathtaking aerial straps pair, a contortion flying streetlamp act, and much more.
“One of the things I’m most proud of with our show is that there’s so much for the kids. It’s obviously for them, but if you took a date, at no point would you feel like you took your date to a kid show,” said Hendrix. “It’s very classy and well-considered and artistic — very Broadway — but there’s nothing over the kids’ heads.”

Pitt Tha Kid, The Next Big Music Producer In Canada And America – Muzique Magazine

By

Dreams and passion can change your life in an unimaginable way. People who are dedicated to their passions become resilient and ready to conquer every challenge that stands in the way of their goals. Pitt Tha Kid’s inspiring journey is the perfect example for all passionate people to chase their dreams.
Pitt Tha Kid is a rising music producer who started his journey when he was in 11th grade. He started out as a rapper but soon realized that his raps were missing one major ingredient; the beat. Pitt realized that he needed a fantastic beat to resurrect life into his raps. Thus he started creating his beat on FL Studio.
He enjoyed the process so much that he dedicated a major chunk of his time to cooking up different beats. Pitt started using his own beats for his song, and people started enjoying his songs. The interesting part was that more than the songs, people were more hooked to the beats. They would often ask Pitt, “Who made the beat?”
Pitt observed his friends, family members, and acquaintances growing interested in his beats, which compelled him to reach a wider audience. Hence, he onboarded YouTube, and he received an overwhelming response. Pitt’s first upload received 23,000 views in just 7 days. This marked an important point in Pitt’s remarkable journey toward music production.
Soon after that, different artists approached Pitt to create beats for their songs. The first major break in Pitt’s career was when he was reached out to by Lloyd Banks. One of Pitt’s friends told him he could connect him to Banks. However, Pitt didn’t take him seriously, but he created the beats. Shortly after that, he was contacted by the Bank’s team to let him know that his beats would be used and he would be credited for it. Pitt was over the moon about this collaboration, and this is what he stated in his interview with hiphopcanada.com:
“The next day, the mixtape was released, and my name was mentioned in the credits of one of the songs. I must’ve played it back at least fifty times.”
After this, Pitt’s journey toward becoming a music producer went forward, and he got a chance to work with major music artists in Canada and America. People started recognizing and appreciating his work.
“Man, it’s surreal; everyone around you starts recognizing you, and people who didn’t know you start reaching out. It was the first thing that made me think that I could do this for a living.”
