Artifact wants to record your family history in podcast-like audio recordings – TechCrunch

After Ross Chanin’s grandfather died, Chanin mourned not only him, but the fact that he’d never gotten a chance to hear more about his grandfather’s life. Over a conversation with a journalist friend, George Quraishi, it became clear to Chanin that Quraishi’s skill set — interviewing and audio editing — could be conducive to capturing a family’s history.
Chanin and Quraishi started conducting interviews for friends and family and recruited software engineers Martin Gouy and Moncef Biaz to build apps to make it easier to record remote interviews and play them back on the web. Convinced that they had the seeds of a business, Chanin and Quraishi decided to apply to Y Combinator and were accepted into the Summer 2020 batch.
Today, their startup — Artifact — has over 10,000 customers across 15 English-, Spanish- and French-speaking countries. It’s raised $5 million inclusive of a seed round led by GV, which had participation from Atento Capital, Goodwater and Offline Ventures and notable angels such as Y Combinator CEO Michael Seibel, Twitch CEO Emmett Shear and former Blizzard CEO Michael Morhaime.
“Interviews are incredible storytelling spaces, but they’re generally reserved for the rich and powerful and are not about our parents, grandparents and children,” Chanin told TechCrunch in an email interview. “Our dream is that Artifact will become the place where families the world over tell and experience their stories.”
Artifact charges customers $149 to have an interviewer (mostly moonlighting journalists, according to Chanin) conduct an interview with a family member. Packages include one interview and an edit with a custom introduction, sound mixing by an audio engineer and a web page for listening and adding photos.
It’s a four-step process. First, Artifact customers tell the interviewer who they’ll be interviewing and what they’ll discuss. Then, Artifact invites the interviewee to choose a day and time for the interview, which happens via phone or videoconferencing. The resulting recording — usually 30 minutes in length, give or take 15 minutes — is edited down to a 20-minute “episode,” which can be shared via the web with loved ones or publicly.
Artifact aims to turn around episodes within five business days of an interview. Up to two guests are included in the price of a single interview, with a $35-per-guest charge for additional interviewees.
“The people in your life may not be natural storytellers, but when they’re guided by professional interviewers, their stories become heirloom-quality episodes that live in your family’s private account,” Chanin said. “Once there, it’s easy to add photos and then securely share your Artifacts with the people you love.”

That’s a lot of sensitive info to upload to the cloud. But Chanin was adamant that Artifact doesn’t share personal data with third parties without “explicit and affirmative” consent from users. The platform stores data for as long as a person maintains an account, although users can delete recordings, notes and photos at any time.
Artifact is one startup among many delivering professional interviewing and audio biography services tailored to families. For instance, Vita’s app lets family members record audio stories and transcribe the text and even hand-select accompanying family photos, recipes and other media content for posterity if they so choose. Tales and Origin offer packages along the same vein while StoryWorth and StoryCorps are more self-service in nature, providing users with the tools to conduct interviews themselves including suggested lines of questioning.
So what sets Artifact apart? Chanin argues it “fills a need that remains unaddressed.”
“The large genealogy platforms do incredible work, helping families trace their lineage and build family trees. Cloud photo and print apps make experiencing family photos easy and fun. [But] while it’s one thing to trace your family’s history, it’s another entirely to record it in the voices of the people themselves,” Chanin said. “It’s the conversation spaces with our professional interviewers that create the magic — the intonations of voice, laughter and emotion that can make it feel like the person we’re listening to is sitting right there in the room with us.”
Artifact is also unique in that it operates on a marketplace model, connecting customers with freelance interviewers, audio editors and sound engineers who piece together each audio biography. The compensation structure for contractors wasn’t immediately clear in our interview with Chanin; we’ve asked Artifact for clarification.
In another differentiator, Artifact has dipped a toe into the corporate market, offering custom podcast creation services to companies, academic institutions and nonprofits. As with its biography business, Artifact’s enterprise-focused offering pairs customers with an interviewer who they instruct to talk to people about certain subjects, with Artifact handling all the scheduling, remote interviewing and editing.
To date, Artifact has produced podcasts for Clipboard Health, Onfleet, Yale, the University of Chicago and the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Chanin claims.
In a bid to remain ahead of rivals, Artifact aims to embrace merging AI technologies to further personalize the experience for its family biography customers. As customers upload photos and videos to their accounts, Artifact will soon begin marrying the images and videos to what’s being spoken about in an interview, Chanin says — no curation required.
“So, this is taking different types of media — image, video and text — and finding connections between them, then surfacing the result to the customer. We are calling this the ‘Sitback Experience,’ where users will simply click play, sit back and listen to people you love telling stories while relevant imagery and video play across the screen. It’ll be like a movie or a Ken Burns documentary about your family.”
Beyond the Sitback Experience, Artifact plans to launch Family Spaces, a dashboard where account holders will be able to add family members in a way that makes it clear which stories the platform’s recorded for individual people.
The swift development roadmap will keep Artifact a step beyond rivals, Chanin asserts, while delivering top-requested improvements to the user base. That’ll be key. Aside from the nascent enterprise venture, Artifact’s growth will depend on convincing existing customers to buy additional packages and new users to join in the first place.
“The pandemic reminded all of us that life is precious and that the people we love must never be taken for granted. In that way, Artifact provided a vehicle for many of our early adopters to act on those feelings and record family stories,” Chanin added. “From day one, we’ve built Artifact lean and as a service that provides immediate value to our customers — that our customers pay for. So in many respects, we launched the company the old fashioned way: introducing a new solution to a universal problem, learning from our customers and not focusing on growth at all costs.”
Chanin wouldn’t disclose Artifact’s burn rate. But he claimed that the company is “well capitalized,” with cash on hand for years. Artifact currently has a 14-person team (excepting the hundreds of freelancers in its marketplace) based in San Francisco and expects to “at least” double headcount over the next 12 months.

PAM Club: beatsbyhand presents I Am Jazz
Born in Port Elizabeth and currently residing in Johannesburg, Hein Bosman started playing music in church before discovering FL Studio at the age of 18, like many curious young people of his generation. At 29, he is now part of the new generation of South African producers who are shaping a modern and radiant deep house. Shares of semiconductor stocks Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (NYSE: TSM), Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA), and Skyworks Solutions (NASDAQ: SWKS) were rising on Tuesday, up as much as 3.4%, 4.6%, and 2.2%, before settling into gains of 2.7%, 4%, and 0.6%, respectively, as of 1:42 p.m. ET. The sector-wide optimism was helped along by a positive note from Bank of America semiconductor analyst Vivek Arya this morning, along with continued optimism over moderating inflation and the broader economy. Arya wrote, "We assume a soft-landing (nonmemory semi sales down [less than 5% year over year], also confirmed by recent Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM) results/outlook) as consumer chip inventory correction is completed by [the first half] and as industrial/auto chip pricing remains resilient."

Answer: There are a few questions to ask here: First, is your withdrawal rate reasonable; second did your adviser do you wrong with those big losses; and third, what do you do about the adviser situation?

On a generally down Tuesday for the stock market, Verizon Communications' (NYSE: VZ) shares did worse than those of many other companies. The telecom giant saw its stock price erode by nearly 2.5%, amid a general slump in tech stocks and related titles, combined with a discouraging price cut from a prominent bank. Before market open, analyst Bryan Craft of Deutsche Bank enacted a 10% cut to his level on Verizon stock.
The conventional wisdom outlook for 2023 is mixed – most market watchers and economists would say that a recession is likely during the first half of the year, with disagreements centered more on the duration and depth of a downturn than its likelihood, and a rebound will come in the second half, leading to stock markets finishing this year about where they began. Weighing in from Morgan Stanley, chief Us equity strategist Mike Wilson notes the conventional wisdom, saying: “Both the sell and buy

The law also provides $9 billion in rebates to help people electrify their home appliances and make their houses more energy-efficient. It’s also allowing Americans to claim a tax credit for inst
After a brief pause for the holiday weekend, shares of cybersecurity stocks are moving higher Tuesday morning, with Fortinet (NASDAQ: FTNT) tacking on 2% through 11 a.m. ET, CrowdStrike Holdings (NASDAQ: CRWD) rising 2.6%, and Zscaler (NASDAQ: ZS) leading the sector higher with a 2.9% gain. As Slate Magazine reports this morning, the Biden Administration "is getting much more aggressive" in the field of cybersecurity — potentially yielding financial benefits for cybersecurity companies including CrowdStrike, Zscaler, and Fortinet. Describing the new, not-yet-public 35-page National Cybersecurity Strategy (NCS) document that President Biden will soon sign, Slate says that on the one hand, the policy "authorizes U.S. defense, intelligence, and law enforcement agencies to go on the offensive, hacking into the computer networks of criminals and foreign governments."

Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) has ruffled some investors' feathers in recent weeks, as it has slashed prices of its electric vehicle (EV) offerings, first in China and then in Europe and the U.S. Ramifications from those moves continue to drive momentum in the stock. Today that momentum is to the upside, with Tesla stock jumping almost 7% at its morning high. As of 11:15 a.m. ET, Tesla shares were still trading up by 4.6%.
The expected layoffs would be the latest in the U.S. technology sector, where companies including Amazon.com Inc and Meta Platforms Inc have announced retrenchment exercises in response to slowing demand and a worsening global economic outlook. Microsoft's move could indicate that the tech sector may continue to shed jobs. "From a big picture perspective, another pending round of layoffs at Microsoft suggests the environment is not improving, and likely continues to worsen," Morningstar analyst Dan Romanoff said.

Russia's current account – a measure of the difference between all money coming into a country through trade, investment and transfers, and what flows back out – came in at $227.4 billion, up 86% from 2021. one take architects' coffee studio reflects the heritage of tangkou – Designboom

Hidden among Tangkou’s natural landscape with its curving mirrored facade, Tangkou Coffee Studio by One Take Architects marks a fusion of the Chinese village’s past and future — reflecting its modern, optimistic future as well as its rich cultural heritage. Marked by a prominent arching orange entrance like an ‘eternal flame in the mountains’, the minimalist café workshop overlooks the idyllic Huangshan Mountains. The sculptural structure is composed of two delicately sweeping walls that unite at a point that forms a cross, reflecting the town’s religious values.

At the same time, the studio welcomes young locals of the future generation to learn coffee preparation skills to support their livelihood, while paying tribute to the town’s rich history — notably the nearby girls’ school and hospital which were inaugurated in 1910 by Dr. Mabel Pantin who pioneered Western medicine in the region.

The team at One Take Architects completes the coffee shop with an ambiguous mirrored facade which discreetly melds in with its natural surroundings, and like a floating illusion, quietly reflects the passage of time. The form is composed of two French window arcs that sweep in delicate motion and create the illusion of thick walls that recall the colors of the interiors in the former Mother’s and Children’s Hospital.

Two separate lines of vision further gather the two adjacent facades which together with the horizontal drainage elements reflect a complete Latin Cross emerging from the expanses of mirror. From certain perspectives, the hidden cross appears to echo the red cross crowning the church down the hill. At night, the result is a floating Latin Cross of light, celebrating the area’s embedded faith and introducing a new luminous monument in mountains for the villagers who will view it from afar.

Inside the Tangkou Coffee Studio, the architects restored the structure’s previous wooden interiors with refreshed finishes. Facing the open view of the mountains, the central semi-circular bar serves as the workspace for selecting and roasting coffee beans and making coffee.

The coffee shop sits close to the Shuhua Girls’ School and Women’s and Tangkou Children’s Hospital which was built in 1910 by Dr. Mabel Pantin, a British Church doctor who also pioneered Western medicine in Tangkou. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, the complex was requisitioned as a military site. Since then, though the buildings have sat inactive for many years, they have been preserved due to their cultural heritage and vital importance to the collective memory of the Tangkou area.

Attracted by the rich culture of the city, the owner of Tangkou Coffee Studio decided to move out to the city and initiated a restoration of the complex alongside the new the Mabel Pantin Art Gallery.  One Take Architects revitalized the existing structure, which now operates as a cultural coffee studio with the neighboring village of Longtan.

SAND hosts your iOS plug-ins, sequences them with patterns … – Create Digital Music

SAND does what Abledon’t.* If you miss plug-in hosting in Ableton Note, here’s a whole app built around sequencing and recording your instrument plug-ins on iOS.
SAND came out this month. This is a first version from developer Matteo Caldari, so not everything on the wishlist is there. (Ableton Link support would be nice, for one!)
But the workflow looks great. You can create unlimited tracks on the Tracks screen. Each track then has an on-screen keyboard and step editor, and lets you quickly add clips. A plug-ins view lets you work with your plug-in instruments and effects via its own UI, or parameters. Everything is MIDI mappable, too.
SAND isn’t alone. Apps like GarageBand and Cubasis do this DAW-style; you also have choices like the AUM mixer. But I really like the simplicity here, especially if you just want to audition an app, sequence some quick ideas, and record your work. Note also nailed that kind of simplicity, but it’s limited to Ableton’s own internal instruments and effects – which makes syncing much easier, but isn’t helpful if you want to play with the new synth you just downloaded.
It seems like one to watch. There are already some useful features planned – not snapping to grid all the time being a significant one – and others being actively evaluated from user requests. Check the roadmap. If Matteo doesn’t get too overwhelmed with all our ideas, SAND could be a must-have app.
Plus, thanks to iOS app pricing, there’s really nothing stopping you from getting both Note and SAND for a few bucks and using each when it fits the task at hand.

PS, one more I hadn’t seen before, but it also looks great on the sequencing side – Riffer gets a mention on Reddit, nice!

Best mouse for music production 2023: the finest mice, trackpads … – MusicRadar

When you purchase through links on our site, we may earn an affiliate commission. Here’s how it works.
Accelerate your DAW workflow with the best mice and input devices from Logitech, Kensington, Apple, Contour and more
Buying a superior computer mouse is a superb way to supercharge your music production setup. The best mouse for music production will track faster, more accurately and more reliably, while a smattering of programmable buttons will have you carving effortlessly through even the most repetitive tasks.
There’s lots to get obsessively excited about when speccing a PC. Wicked processor speeds, unrivalled graphics power, ultra-fast SSDs, humongous amounts of RAM and plenty of flashing LEDs are all extremely gas worthy. But mice?
Most of us end up using the basic two-button rodent that comes bundled for free. Which is a mistake because, as my granny loved to warn me, the only free cheese is in a mouse trap. What’s the point of the super-fast machine if it’s always waiting for you to catch up with your clunky mouse moves?
If you’re currently bogged down in two-button hell, investing in a better mouse will not only see your productivity soar, it may even help to keep you healthier. Read on to discover the very best mice, trackballs and trackpads for music production. Want to know the difference? Head to our buying advice section.
The Logitech MX Master 3 is our weapon of choice. Not only does it boast many impressive mechanical and technological features, but its comprehensive integration with leading creative software packages is the icing on the cake. With its seven programmable buttons, innovative scroll wheels and an accurate Darkglass sensor, it’s difficult to see how Logitech can improve on this latest version.
Our second recommendation is the Contour Shuttle Pro V2 (opens in new tab), and yes, we are sheepishly aware that we’re recommending a bit of kit that, strictly speaking, isn’t a mouse. Still, we have good reason to do so. The Shuttle Pro V2 is a superb companion device that’s designed to be used in combination with your mouse.
So, while you’re busy clicking away with one hand, your other hand can be scrolling through tracks with the Shuttle’s jog wheel while, at the same time, triggering shortcuts from its 15 programmable buttons. It’s such a beautifully efficient way to work.Best mouse for music production: Logitech MX Master 3The Master MX mouse just keeps getting better. This, the third iteration, boasts a whopping 4,000 dpi resolution and, thanks to its Darkglass sensor, will track accurately on almost any surface, including glass.
Logitech claims that its MagSpeed Electromagnetic scroll wheels – there’s one up top and a thumbwheel on the side – are 90% faster and 87% more precise than its regular mice, performance boosts well worth having if you’re forever scrolling through tracks and selecting regions.
The biggest speed kick will come from programming its seven buttons to replace commonly used keystrokes. Pretty much any app is ripe for such workflow hacks, including Logic Pro, Cubase and Ableton. Content creators will be pleased to learn that the MX Master 3 even ships with predefined customizations for Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, Microsoft Office and more.Best mouse for music production: Contour Shuttle Pro V2Okay, well spotted, the Shuttle Pro V2 is not a mouse. However, it deserves a place in this guide because it’s kinda mouse-like, and it may be a more sensible buy than replacing your existing mouse. Alternatively, invest in both this and a new programable mouse and you’ll enjoy a real powerhouse of a setup. Let’s explain.
The Shuttle Pro V2 is best described as a mouse companion that’s worked with your free hand – the left hand, if you’re right-handed. It comprises a shuttle/jog wheel combo for fast/slow track scrolling, and fifteen programmable buttons to fire off shortcuts and macros.
Essentially, this clever little device enables you to navigate (and much more) with your free hand while continuing to do mousey editing-type stuff with the other. Working precisely with your non-dominant hand takes time but once mastered you’ll benefit from a huge boost in efficiency.
The buttons are fully customisable, but it ships with pre-configured settings for most popular DAWs and video editing software too, making it ideal for music producers and creators.
Built quality is excellent, it’s weighty enough to stay put during use and the footprint is manageable for most desks. For those of you constantly on the move, Contour also makes the smaller, less expensive and admittedly slightly less capable Shuttle Xpress.Best mouse for music production: Kensington Pro Fit Ergo Vertical Wireless MouseHere’s a wireless mouse that offers both comfort and speed. Let your hand fall naturally to your desk and it’ll assume a handshake position that requires further inward rotation to hold a traditional mouse. To counteract this rotation, the top face of the Pro Fit Ergo Vertical mouse is tilted to 46.7 degrees, enabling your hand and forearm to adopt a more comfortable, neutral position.
Admittedly, the chunky looks are a bit odd, and the height takes some getting used to, but Kensington claims that it eliminates soft tissue compression, which has to be a good thing.
Six programmable buttons, a high resolution 1,600 dpi laser and a scroll wheel – a small ball, in truth – that can navigate both horizontally and vertically make this a fully-featured mouse that’s ready to speed you safely through long sessions at your DAW.Best mouse for music production: Kensington Expert Mouse Wireless TrackballIt may only have a resolution of 400 dpi, but don’t let that fool you, the Expert Mouse Wireless Trackball can show an impressive turn of speed when you need it. Unlike similar products that boast less impressive balls, Kensington’s range-topper features a big weighty red ‘un that’s approaching the size of a billiard ball.
This provides you with the necessary gearing to fling your cursor across a large screen with just a quick spin of your fingers. At slower speeds the ball is plenty accurate enough for music production tasks and, like most trackballs, it’s a godsend to be able to click on a critical selection without the risk of inadvertently nudging the cursor.
It’s not perfect, four buttons is only just enough, it’s a little too large to stuff into a laptop bag and you cannot scroll horizontally without holding down a modifier button. Nevertheless, the Expert Mouse Wireless Trackball is a joy to use, especially in crowded studios where space is at a premium.Best mouse for music production: Logitech mx ergo advanced wireless trackballAs its name suggests, this trackball’s raison d’être is healthy ergonomics. It’s a strange looking beast, like the lovechild of a vertical mouse and a trackball, but it’s claimed to reduce muscle activity by 20% and improve both wrist and forearm comfort. To facilitate the latter, the MX Ergo can be tilted up to 20 degrees from horizontal to suit your arm’s natural posture.
Tracking with the thumbwheel is both fast and accurate. If you feel the need for speed one minute but you’re work demands precision the next, no worries. A handy button, located just behind the ball, will instantly switch you between fast-tracking and precision modes.
Six programmable buttons are just waiting to be assigned shortcuts for your favourite DAW, or any other software for that matter. Just like its cousin, the Logitech MX Master 3, it comes complete with predefined shortcuts for Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, Microsoft Office and more.
In fact, if the superb functionality of the MX Master 3 appeals but you’d rather have a trackball than a mouse, the MX Ergo could be just what you’re looking for.Best mouse for music production: Apple Magic TrackpadApple’s Magic Trackpad shares a similar minimalist aesthetic with the Magic Mouse, but with a lot more functionality.
Appearance wise, it’s nothing to look at, which is great. Just a cool 6″ x 4.5″ slim wedge of austere aluminium and glass that’ll take up next to no space on your desk. Unlike the Magic Mouse, it can be used wired or wireless, which is an advantage you’ll appreciate when caught out with a drained battery during a critical job.
As you’d expect, it works just like an oversized modern laptop trackpad. You can lightly track and swipe to your heart’s content on the pressure sensitive surface, which because it has no moving parts uses haptic feedback to register clicks.
But the feature that really sells the Magic Trackpad to us is Apple’s Force Touch technology, which opens up a tremendous amount of functionality in applications such as Garageband and Logic Pro. Pressing a little harder on the glass surface can trigger a host of  useful shortcuts, including adding notes to the Piano Roll and specifying automation points.
It’s available in two colours, but even though they both function identically the black version is currently more expensive than the white. Thanks Apple.Best mouse for music production: Razer Basilisk V3The Basilisk is an out-and-out performance-orientated gaming mouse, built for leaping whoever wields it through fantastically improbable challenges while deploying grenades and other deadly weaponry. So, what is it doing in this buyer’s guide?
In common with many gaming mice, the Basilisk has been engineered to be very responsive and extremely precise. It also boasts a multitude of programmable buttons that can replicate common keystrokes or trigger a host of effort-saving macros. So, it doesn’t take much imagination to see how a gaming mouse could bring new levels of accuracy and efficiency to your DAW workflow.
Its crowning feature is its 26,000 dpi optical sensor, though us musos will probably be more interested in its ultra-slick four-way scroll wheel, smooth PTFE feet and 11 – yes, count ’em – 11 programable buttons.
It also performs a light show that puts the Blackpool Tower to shame, but if that’s not your thing you can dim the LEDs.
It could be a game-changer.Best mouse for music production: Contour Unimouse WirelessIt’s easy to see why the Unimouse won Contour a Red Dot Design award, it must be one of the most adjustable mice available on the market. In theory, it’s a vertical mouse but in practice you can decrease the amount of tilt to a relatively subtle 35 degrees or opt for a more acute 70 degrees. Whichever is more comfortable for you.
The thumb support is also completely adjustable in all directions – in/out, up/down, forward/backwards, inclination and rotation. Get the position right and Contour claim that it will help you maintain a more relaxed grip, lessening the chance of repetitive strain injuries. For you southpaws out there, the Unimouse is available in a left-hand version too, which is something of a rarity.
If all this sounds a bit clinical for creative use you’ll be pleased to learn that the Unimouse boasts a very respectable 2,800 dpi sensor and has seven buttons, six of which are programmable. It’s a shame the scroll wheel only scrolls vertically but you can easily remedy this oversight by partnering it with a Contour Shuttle.Best mouse for music production: Apple Magic MouseThis is an astonishingly beautiful mouse that’s way ahead of the competition in terms of aesthetics, if not ergonomics. Frankly, it’s a device you’ll either love or hate.
It looks fabulous, blessed with a flowing, streamlined silhouette that’s sleek, purposeful and stylish. As with all Apple products, there’s definitely a characteristic ‘less is more’ vibe going on here.
The Magic Mouse’s minimalist aluminium base is capped with a couple of millimetres of featureless, smooth-as-glass perspex, with no visible buttons or scroll wheels. Essentially, what Apple has done is stuck a trackpad on the top of a Bluetooth mouse.
Scrolling is a wonderful experience, with the very lightest of touches sending your cursor scampering right, left, up or down. It’s completely effortless. On the downside, beyond configuring left and right buttons, plus a few gestures, functionality is rather limited.
Apple doesn’t publish a resolution figure for its Magic Mouse, but performance is sufficient. Similarly, wireless operation is limited to Bluetooth, which isn’t the fastest, most reliable technology but it does the job.
In use, in contrast to some of the bulkier mice in this guide, your hand will float over the top of the Magic Mouse, rather than rest on it. Whether you find this more comfortable or not is down to personal preference. Man in home recording studioIs the mouse that’s bundled with your PC a bit, well, Mickey Mouse? Perhaps you’re looking to revolutionise your workflow with a multi-button wonder that’ll speed you through the most repetitive of tasks? Or maybe you’re worried about developing a repetitive strain injury and want something more ergonomic?
Whatever the reason for retiring your existing rodent, we’ve got your back, so get ready to scroll through our hands-on guide to buying the very best mouse for music production needs.
Why you can trust MusicRadar Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test.
We’re using the word ‘mouse’ somewhat loosely in this guide because some of you will be better off with a trackpad or trackpad.
Mouse
A true mouse has its advantages, familiarity for starters. Most of us have grown up using a mouse since kindergarten, and we’ve since developed the skills and dexterity needed to wield one effectively. So, switching to any other kind of input device will take time to get used to.
Modern premium mice are fast, precise, comfortable, reliable and cost-effective. Trading up from a frustrating chunk of plastic (Mus Frustratus) to a mouse that’s a delight to use (Mus Delectatio) really isn’t that costly when you factor in the potential efficiency savings.
Trackball
The primary advantage of a trackball is its compactness. Moving your cursor from one side of a 30″ screen to the other with a mouse will typically require a foot of desk space (best move that coffee mug), while a trackball will take up less than a quarter of this. If your desk is already cluttered with controllers, interfaces, modules and mixers then a trackball can be a godsend.
Another significant advantage a trackball brings is that you can click a button without the risk of moving your cursor, a blessing when working with very precise selections. In comparison, even the slightest touch tends to nudge a mouse out of position.
Some manufacturers claim that trackballs lessen the risk of RSI too, because they don’t need to be gripped and manhandled in the way that mice do.
Trackpad
Trackpads share similar advantages with trackballs, plus they can be sensitive to touch and gestures. Many of us who own or use laptops will have already mastered their use and they score highly in the looks department.
If you find the immense enjoyment you get from producing music is being sapped by the common repetitive tasks required by your DAW then, in the name of all things holy, atheist or agnostic, go buy yourself a programmable mouse.
How often do you find yourself using your keyboard, or worse still your DAW’s main menu, to pull up the mixer or loop a region? How long-winded a process is it to use the transport controls to rewind, forward wind or start playback immediately after you’ve repositioned the playhead?
Buy a programmable multi-button mouse and all these mundane tasks, together with many, many more, can be automated at a touch of a button. Freeing your time to do what you do best – being creative.
Serious gamers write wireless mice off for being too slow and unresponsive, and they’re right, up to a point. However, music producers and creators really don’t need the same level of performance, so we recommend wireless over wired.
Wires just get in the way, and if you’re trying to self-record yourself playing an instrument then it’s often handy to be able to operate your DAW from a modest distance. Better to move your mouse to a grand piano than the other way around.
Wireless mice typically operate over Bluetooth or 2.4GHz radio frequencies (RF), with many products offering both options. RF offers lower latency but requires a USB receiver dongle, which will take up a precious USB slot on your PC. Bluetooth may be slower, but it’s not noticeably so, and chances are your laptop or desktop already has a built in receiver.
Mouse sensitivity is expressed in dots per inch (dpi), so the higher the dpi rating the more sensitive the sensor and the faster and more precisely your cursor will move. Gamers favour very sensitive sensors, for obvious reasons, and we producers and creators also need a mouse that’s going to work with a high level of precision.
Of course, you don’t always want your mouse to be racing around the screen, so look for one that enables you to lower the dpi rating on the fly.
When Steve Jobs and his team developed the first commercially available mouse back in 1984 they probably didn’t foresee that, decades on, busy producers, creators and editors would be using very similar devices for 10 hours a day or more. They certainly wouldn’t have had an inkling of the damage that kind of intense usage can cause our soft tissues, tendons and nerves.
Sadly, many mice still look pretty similar to Steve’s original puck-like device, but fortunately there are alternatives. Brands, such as Kensington, Logitech and Contour have all developed ergonomic mice, including vertical models, which they claim prevent and alleviate RSI-type injuries. Trackballs and trackpads also enjoy a better rep for preventing such problems.
Everyone is different so, if you can, try a variety of solutions to see which one you prefer. The very best advice is to avoid using these peripherals for intense periods in the first place, which we accept is easier said than done. That said, a programmable mouse that increases your efficiency should free up more time away from your computer. Sounds like a smart buy to us.

Massive eruption from icy volcanic comet detected in solar system – Livescience.com

When you purchase through links on our site, we may earn an affiliate commission. Here’s how it works.
Astronomers observed a major eruption from a volcanic comet flying through the solar system, likely spewing more than 1 million tons of debris into space.A bizarre, volcanic comet has violently erupted, spewing out more than 1 million tons of gas, ice and the “potential building blocks of life” into the solar system
The volatile comet, known as 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann (29P), is around 37 miles (60 kilometers) wide and takes around 14.9 years to orbit the sun. 29P is believed to be the most volcanically active comet in the solar system. It is one of around 100 comets, known as “centaurs,” that have been pushed from the Kuiper Belt — a ring of icy comets that lurk beyond Neptune — into a closer orbit around the sun between those of Jupiter and Neptune, according to NASA (opens in new tab).
On Nov. 22, an amateur astronomer named Patrick Wiggins noticed that 29P had drastically increased in brightness, according to Spaceweather.com (opens in new tab). Subsequent observations made by other astronomers revealed that this spike in luminosity was the result of a massive volcanic eruption — the second largest seen on 29P in the last 12 years, according to the British Astronomical Association (opens in new tab) (BAA). The largest eruption during this time was a huge outburst in September 2021
An eruption of this size is “pretty rare,” Cai Stoddard-Jones (opens in new tab), a doctoral candidate at Cardiff University in the U.K. who took a follow-up image of 29P’s eruption, told Live Scence. “It’s [also] difficult to say why this one is so big.”.
The explosion was followed by two smaller outbursts on Nov. 27 and Nov. 29, according to BAA.
Related: Watch the biggest-ever comet outburst spray dust across the cosmos
Unlike volcanoes on Earth, which eject scalding-hot magma and ash from the mantle, 29P spits out extremely cold gases and ice from its core. This unusual type of volcanic activity is known as cryovolcanism, or “cold volcanism.”
Cryovolcanic bodies, which include a handful of other comets and moons in the solar system such as Saturn’s Enceladus, Jupiter’s Europa and Neptune’s Triton, have a surface crust surrounding a mainly solid icy core, Richard Miles (opens in new tab), a BAA astronomer who has studied 29P, told Live Science. Over time, radiation from the sun can cause the comets’ icy interiors to sublime from solid to gas, which causes a buildup of pressure beneath the crust. When radiation from the sun also weakens the crust, that pressure causes the outer shell to crack, and cryomagma shoots out into space.  The cryomagma from comets like 29P is mainly composed of carbon monoxide and nitrogen gas, as well as some icy solids and liquid hydrocarbons, which “may have provided some of the raw materials from which life originated on Earth,” NASA representatives wrote.
The ejecta from the most recent eruption of 29P stretched up to 34,800 miles (56,000 km) away from the comet and is traveling at speeds of up to 805 mph (1,295 km/h), according to BAA. The plume “probably comprised more than one million tons of ejecta,” Miles added.
Photographs of the erupting comet also show that the plume formed an irregular Pac-Man-like shape, which suggests the eruption originated from a single point or region on the comet’s surface, according to Spaceweather.com.
These observations back up previous research that suggests 29P’s eruptions are linked to its rotation. Miles and Stoddard-Jones believe that the comet’s slower rotation causes solar radiation to absorb more unevenly on the comet, triggering the eruptions. So far eruptions from the comet tend to match up with its 57-day rotation period, the researchers said.
Related: Volcanic eruptions on the moon happened much more recently than we thought
Researchers also suspect that 29P’s most explosive eruptions follow a cycle based on its orbit around the sun. A number of large eruptions were detected between 2008 and 2010, and now two massive explosions have occurred within the last two years, Miles said. It is therefore likely that there will be least one more major eruption from 29P by the end of 2023, he added. However, it is less clear how this longer eruption cycle is occurring, because unlike most other comets, which get closer to the sun during a specific period of their orbits, 29P has a largely circular orbit, meaning it never gets much closer to the sun than its average distance, Stoddard-Jones said.
Largest comet ever seen has a heart ‘blacker than coal,’ and it’s headed this way
Why are asteroids and comets such weird shapes?
Blazing comet tail is whipped by solar winds in astonishing astronomy photo
29P has largely been ignored by the astronomical community since its discovery in 1927, but as new evidence emerges about its unusual volcanic activity it is starting to be taken more seriously, Miles said. “Clearly there is something new to be discovered in studying 29P.”
The James Webb Space Telescope is scheduled to take a closer look at 29P early next year, he added.

EQ Is On The Decline: Businesses Utilizing Voice AI Can Reverse … – Dataconomy

Globally, emotional intelligence (EQ) has declined during the past 50 years but Voice AI provides some answers. In other words, the rise of social media, always-on computers, and an experience that disregards emotion have all had a detrimental influence on our EQ and IQ in the contemporary technological age.
Table of Contents
According to a 2018 ScienceAlert article by Peter Dockrill indicates that “an analysis of some 730,000 results by the Ragnar Frisch Center for Economic Research in Norway reveals that the Flynn effect hit its peak for people born during the mid-1970s and has significantly declined ever since.”
Humans might benefit from using artificial intelligence to raise both their IQ and EQ. However, when it comes to technology, essential elements of human communication are frequently left out, which results in an unpleasant user experience, loss of insightful information, hasty or ill-informed decisions, and ultimately a lesser level of emotional awareness.
“We have a lot of neurons in our brain for social interactions. We’re born with some of those skills, and then we learn more. It makes sense to use technology to connect to our social brains, not just our analytical brains. Just like we can understand speech and machines can communicate in speech, we also understand and communicate with humor and other kinds of emotions. And machines that can speak that language — the language of emotions — are going to have better, more effective interactions with us,” said Erik Brynjolfsson, a professor from Stanford University.

The fourth industrial revolution is upon us, and with it, artificial intelligence (AI) is learning to recognize and decipher spoken and nonverbal human emotional cues including tone, facial expressions, and body language. Thanks to developments in emotion recognition, NLP, sentiment analysis, machine learning, and a stronger integration of languages and psychology, algorithms have substantially improved.
Through inventions like Alexa, Siri, and Google Assistant, voice AI technology has already into the hands of billions of end consumers. By 2026, it is anticipated that the voice technology market would rise to a startling $55B. Why do we still become upset when our words are not received despite having access to all of these current technologies?
We underestimate how easy the solution is. In essence, current technologies are tone-deaf. They are unable to discern the feelings that underlie our words. Our tone may be understood, but not our orders. Find out how to differentiate AI from non-AI to make things more clear for yourself.
Even while we have amazing voice technologies that can decipher and understand the meaning behind language and word choice, we have also built robots that are missing certain important details. Only 7% of human communication involves words. In contrast, tone of voice, which makes up around 40% of human communication, is the most reliable passive indication of someone’s thoughts. Unacceptably high a number.
Tonal analytics represents a brand-new step in the development of emotional comprehension. Tone is swiftly evolving into a fundamental requirement for automated analysis and voice communication in the future. Voice is ubiquitous, and conversational AI is rapidly expanding. Like voice, tone is present everywhere, yet it is generally unexplored. To communicate effectively between people and robots, tone of voice is essential. A more complete emotional comprehension is produced by combining voice AI with other conversational AI techniques, such text and body language software. To provide a fuller picture of human communication, these technologies work in concert to intelligently link all elements of complicated and unstructured data.
A customer service platform is offered by Uniphore, a conversational AI startup, to enhance business discussions in contact centers and throughout the sales process. The system from Uniphore makes use of speech AI, computer vision, and tonal emotion. The company is currently valued at $2.5 billion, has over $620 million in capital, and is actively growing abroad. Conversational intelligence is crucial for every organization, according to co-founder Umesh Sachdev.
“Understanding conversations and the data and insights derived from them is essential to every business,” said Sachdev. Only when all variables are taken into account—word choice, body language, facial expressions, and tone of voice—can a conversation be comprehended.
In order to improve how investors make decisions, startup Helios Life Enterprises translates the tonal distinctions of leaders’ voices into practical advice. Executives speak about a significant quantity of crucial information on earnings calls and other audio or video engagements. It is quite challenging to conceal the fact that the tone of voice is a route via which emotional information seeps.
Due to its unique emphasis and the fact that it is the only business that produces tonal analyses of CEOs, Helios is quickly gaining attention in the banking sector (more than 4K US equities). In the alternative data arena ($143.31 billion by 2030), Helios has opened up a whole new channel of insights by accounting for the essential tonal components required for comprehension.
Other voice AI businesses use the subtleties in voice to assist in the diagnosis of patients with various disorders. For instance, Sonde Health uses analysis of voice biomarkers to diagnose Parkinson’s disease in patients more quickly than ever before, enabling speedier treatment.
A phone app developed by CompanionMX can identify depressed people by listening to their voice patterns. The information produced helps to provide a complete picture of a patient’s mental health, and the app format makes the technology more usable for end users.
The application cases for tone are infinite, ranging from contact centers to sales to medical to finance, thus the issue is: how will tonal insights influence new sectors and alter those that already exist? How effective will Voice AI technologies be?
Leaders must take into account how the technology will affect their organizations and the broader economy as artificial intelligence acquires a higher EQ through tonal insights. We have also discussed how could AI transform developing countries, you can check it out for further information!
