On Sunday night, legendary roots reggae artist Burning Spear graced the stage for a nearly two-hour set at the YouTube Theater at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif. The venerable singer and percussionist brought his eight-piece backing band to The Golden State for several appearances as part of his current Fan Appreciation tour. The evening included cuts from throughout Spear’s illustrious career, opening the festivities with “Door Peep” from 1973’s Studio One Presents, and touching down in the catalog with classics such as “Resting Place,” “Man In The Hills,” “Jah No Dead,” and “Marcus Garvey.”
Spear bounced between center-stage, singing and dancing, and stage right, adding flourishes on his iconic set of red congas to the steady, one-drop groove. He also left plenty of room for solos from his talented ensemble that included a three-piece horn section, with each entry in the dozen-song performance typically clocking in at close to ten minutes. After the California run of dates, the tour moves east with August stops scheduled in Hartford, Philadelphia, and SummerStage in NYC’s Central Park.
